CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Vasiliy Yegorovich Ardankin
• Character Age: 33
• Character Canon: Original Character
• Canon Point: Winter 2018, 3 years after his 'rebirth'.

• Character History: "Wiki" here!

• Character Personality: Provide information about their personality, both negative and positive aspects — with three of each. Give examples of how they've behaved this way. You do not need to provide an essay, but please submit enough to give a feel for the character.

— Positive Trait: Altruistic Vasiliy is a true believer in the idea of communism as it's supposed to be, and prioritizes the good of the many over the good of the few—including himself. The idea of devoting oneself to a collective and a community genuinely appeals to him, and he's strongly moved by the urge to protect and help people who are disadvantaged in life however he can. This can be taken to extremes—during an event in Deerington in which the characters were onboard the Titanic at its sinking, Vasiliy contracted hypothermia and almost died from prolonged immersion in the deep, icy waters filling the third class hallways because he was hellbent on helping as many workers out as he could.
— Positive Trait: Hardworking Vasiliy works himself to the bone without complaint, routinely. In America, he worked 12-hour shifts as an EMT; in Russia, he spent years deprived of sleep, working increasingly long and demanding hours to keep up with the rising quotas Stalin and the Politburo set. Labor has been a part of his world as long as he's able to remember, and he does take pride in the quality of his work.
— Positive Trait: Compassionate Vasiliy is deeply moved by the pain and misfortune of other people, and is a comforting presence when he's working as an EMT. He chose a new career that allows him to feel like he's saving people and easing their pain, and feels an intense need to try and counterbalance the cosmic harm of the pain he brought other people. Ironically, though, this compassion was what became warped into rationalization for convincing people to sign false confessions—despite the fact that he earnestly believed that the state was right in punishing most of the people that passed through his hands, he also was never really comfortable (to say the least) with typical methods of torture used by physical interrogators and saw himself as helping people avoid that end even despite the intense stress, moral dissonance, danger, etc of the job. In Vasiliy's mind, the execution that many of the people who listened to him and signed would face was a better end than being tortured until they were willing to sign, then still being executed at the end of the day.

— Negative Trait: Follower Vasiliy isn't a leader by nature, and he doesn't like the pressure of being the only one to make decisions. He's very susceptible to cults of personality and gravitates toward strong, authoritative figures—he was deeply enmeshed in both Stalin and Yezhov's cults of personality for most of his life, venerating them almost as living gods, and this led him to blindly trust, assuming that they'd never treat him the way they'd treated so many hundreds of thousands of others and that something must have been wrong with the people Stalin and Yezhov killed as opposed to something being wrong with Stalin and Yezhov. He trusted their judgement as he carried out their mutual will—interrogating hundreds of his fellow workers and Russians, almost all of them innocent, or certainly not guilty of crimes deserving capital punishment. He's mostly unlearned this pattern of thinking, but it's still a work in progress, and he still harbors a lot of very conflicted feelings about both due to how long they held tremendous emotional importance in his life. The basic tendency to look to others for guidance still remains as part of his core personality, and to this day he immediately dismisses any criticisms of Felix Dzerzhinsky, the "Father of the NKVD", as reactionary, no matter how much truth is in them.
— Negative Trait: Morally Dualistic Vasiliy, as is typical of his time, passes swift, harsh judgment on other people. Everyone to him is either good or evil, with very little room for gray areas; an idea is either almost inscrutable or a danger to the people. He assesses everyone he meets against a framework that's difficult for most people in a modern Capitalist society to hold up to, and tends to come at meeting new people from an angle of determining whether or not they're an enemy.
— Negative Trait: Paranoid Vasiliy's greatest flaw, at least in his modern life, is his Soviet-typical paranoia. His wariness and unwillingness (and, often, inability) to share unnecessary details or criticisms, traits which kept him alive during the Great Purge, are now perceived as unfriendliness or extreme introversion. A great deal of the impulses that were rational and understandable during his time — answering the door with a gun tucked into his waistband, refusal to break even small laws through activities like jaywalking — now resonate as paranoia, and they're reflective of a very real pathological lack of trust in the government. He gives police officers in particular a very wide berth because he understands their mentality to a degree that most civilians don't, and he knows from personal experience how deep corruption can run — but this made him seem slightly 'off' and aloof in his near-daily social interactions with the police when he was an EMT during his time alive. He carries his gun with him almost everywhere as a way to comfort himself and feel like he has control over a situation.

• Character Skills:

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic: Vasiliy's been an EMT-B for about a year now, and can handle trauma cases on his own. He lacks diagnostic skill.
Persuasion/Emotional Manipulation: Vasiliy is very, very good at appearing nonthreatening, being disarming, and persuading others; this ability made him a very talented interrogator.
Marksmanship: Having been a Chekist, he's trained to handle and fire a handgun; he's more comfortable with a revolver than a semi-automatic, but can use either. Compared to the general population, he has a great aim; compared to his coworkers, he's about average—he's not on a sniper's level of skill, but he can be reasonably expected to hit a moving target in the chest if that's where he chooses to aim, for example.
Interrogation: He's interrogated hundreds of people, and is excellent at convincing people to give him information—even if they have to invent it to do so.
Hand-to-hand combat: Despite being (by modern American/Canadian standards) shorter of stature at 5'7", Vasiliy's a good fighter. He's not a master, but he knows enough about critical points and technique from his training in the NKVD to drop someone and/or get their arms behind their back very quickly—with the physical strength to back it up.
Ice Skating: Feels relevant to mention given the setting. Vasiliy's been ice skating every winter since he was very little, so he's great at it.

• Character Inventory:
— ITEM ONE: Nagant m1895 revolver, the same model as his old service weapon. This one was obtained at a gun show - ironically, despite all of his attempts to distance himself from his past, he chose to carry a fairly antiquated weapon because he didn't want to leave his comfort zone. It is one of the few elements of his past he's held on to, one of the few links he found himself unable to sever.
— ITEM TWO: Standard EMS Duffel, slightly more advanced than a basic first aid kit.
— ITEM THREE: Small black-and-white profile shot of Vladimir Lenin, framed.
