WELCOME TO
DEERINGTON

Admittedly, the townsfolk are deeply unsettling, reminding him a bit of the endless rows of identical female dolls populating the toy aisles of American storesβ€”Barbie. That's her name. Barbie. The endless iterations of Barbie in the American toy aisles. This aside, though, they haven't shown any outright malevolence toward him, with the exception of the doctors' shunning, although that's not entirely unfamiliar behavior; after he'd been marked toward the end of his life, as he watched Yezhov'sβ€”and, by extension, his ownβ€”time run outhis colleagues had treated him in much the same way. He was a foreign element and a danger to associate with, and he cannot fault them for wanting to avoid death.∎

Vasiliy arrived in Deerington in December 2019 after dying on an EMS call on highway I-90 in Chicago, where he settled when he came to the United Statesβ€” while he was walking from the parked ambulance to a car that had gone into a full skid on the highway and smashed into the guardrail, another driver lost control of their vehicle and swerved in the same direction. Vasiliy was hit from behind at approximately 65 miles an hour and died of mass internal bleeding before reaching the hospital.

During his first month he was not struck by the deadlights or frozen, but he did learn a good amount about them through what he witnessedβ€”and began to make some observations about his coworkers at the hospital, too. It became abundantly clear that the burden of EMS calls outside of the hospital campus would be falling on him and any other nonresident EMTs, not the native Harren staff, who, like the doctors and nurses, seem to be either unable or unwilling to leave its bounds. He was almost killed by the dementors roaming through Deerington, but his dream guide, an American Bison, manifested at the last moment because he cried out for help.

In January 2020 Vasiliy was among those Sleepers who were transported to the Titanic. He occupied third class and served as a doctor without the gentle anaesthetic of amnesiaβ€”but the ship's supernatural effects did begin to seep into his consciousness, transforming his hatred of the ruling class into violent ideation. He came close to death by drowning while trying to evacuate third-class passengers, but Will Graham, under full amnesia, saved his life despite the two of them having a dramatic clash earlier in the month. Will saw the date engraved on Vasiliy's sidearm; in his borderline hallucinatory state, Vasiliy automatically offered up the same explanation he's rehearsed a hundred times: 'It was my grandfather's.' This raised Will's suspicions, but not enough for him to immediately make any connection.

HOSPITAL
β†—

Vasiliy is currently employed at the Harren Hospital as an EMT on the lowest payscale. He knows that something is deeply off about his resident coworkers and has noticed that they never leave the hospital β€” even the EMTs. Because of that, he works a tremendous amount of overtime and is most likely to be found in the on-call room. If your character calls 911, Vasiliy will be the one who shows up.

Vasiliy resides in Unit 313 on the third floor of the David Cliff apartment complex - a cramped 1BR/1BA with hardwood floors and radiators that frequently stop working altogether. Its decorations are very Spartan: a small television, a phonograph, a couch and armchair, a kitchen table with matching chairs, a bed, a dresser, a small bookshelf, and a bedside table are all there is. In the wintertime, people looking in from the street may be able to notice the towels jammed into the windowsills for extra insulation. Oh, and he's manually installed two additional locks on the front door.

Vasiliy gained access to his dream guide through the December Event β€” after being cornered by the dementors, he cried out for help, which summoned it even without the whistle typically granted during the Great Sleep. The dream guide is an external manifestation of his soul that takes the shape of an American Bison, a species known both for being fiercely protective of the most vulnerable members of the herd and for a highly communal mentality that can end with stampedes.

MAIN ST

As of February 2020, Vasiliy currently has in his possession:

β—† 6 drachma coins (jan event)
β—† summoning whistle (dec event)
β—† winter ems uniform
β—† ems kit bag
β—† nagant m1895 revolver ammo

β—† the communist manifesto (russian vers.)
β—† deerington license
β—† 3 photographs (dec event)
β—† stuffed deer (dec event)
β—† cigarettes and lighter
Vasiliy keeps his Deerington license on a lanyard around his neck, hidden under his clothes - and he's covered the DOB in Sharpie. There's no way for other characters to know this unless they have the other document to reference, but the number on his Deerington License matches his party number from his first life.

The weapon Vasiliy carries, the Nagant M1985, is a gas-seal revolver designed for use by the Russian government and secret police. It was a favorite because its novel design makes it the only revolver that can fit a suppressor - which was of obvious use to the NKVD. The M1895 was given, not purchased, and it was an honor to receive one during Vasiliy's time - it was symbolic of one's worth to the Communist Party, engraved with the Soviet star and the year of issue. Although the one he carries today was purchased at a gun show in Chicago, it has the same year-of-issue as the one he originally carried during his time in the NKVD: 1937, which is why he keeps it holstered instead of out (as he does at home) when in the presence of other people. Someone with specific knowledge of Russian firearms and Russian history, provided they had his date of birth and saw the engraved date, would be able to deduce that Vasiliy took part in the Great Purge in his late twenties. A modern semiautomatic pistol would be more efficient, although the M1895 outdoes others in its class enough to have been used all the way into the 1940s - but even though he constantly treads a line between trying to repent for his past and distance himself from it, he still carries the weapon that embodies the very agency he was associated with because it's what he's familiar with and what he learned to shoot on.

The first photograph from the event, one of the recipient's fondest, most cherished memories, shows a thirtysomething man dressed in a Russian infantryman's uniform c. 1916 hoisting a delighted child into the air. Vasiliy is six years old, and his father has just returned from the front lines of WWI.
